Involvements: Art Fellow, Secretary of Dreamers and Allies Student Organization (DASO), and the Entrepreneurship Program.
Hello! My name is Aliya Segura. I'm here to tell you about my Arrupe College experience.
How I chose my major:
I selected a degree in English as I thoroughly enjoyed the subject. I have always wanted to be an author and gravitate towards writing. Reading is one of my favorite things to do, but recently I fell in love with my communications and psychology class. I selected a Liberal Arts and Humanities degree because I love art, reading and wanted to enjoy my time in college.
My plans after graduation:
I plan to go to Columbia to receive a bachelor's in communications. Digital media is so interesting as I have learned a lot in my communications classes. I wanted to go somewhere where I felt I could represent Arrupe while also pursuing my passions. I plan to work at an Art Museum as I love to be part of event planning or creating online content available to those who want to attend art museums but may not always have the means to do so.
Professor a new student should absolutely take a class with:
Definitely Professor Gutierrez in his psychology class and Professor Strang in her Art Class. It is a core requirement for all students, but he is such a great professor who can take his time to explain the definitions, cases and has a great sense of humor. He makes the content digestible, and the homework is fun to do which I never thought I would say.
Class I never expected to love:
Philosophy, I think is because I did not much about it. I was scared to interpret and share my ideas. Yet, in this class I learned how to culminate my own ideas to where I can contribute to the class. I loved being able to engage with my classmates and Professor Tarantino. I was a bit intimidated since some of these readings were difficult, but Professor Tarantino and my classmates were so engaging during the pandemic which allowed me to always look forward to my class.
Best thing I've done since coming to Arrupe:
I think the best thing I have done is become an Art Fellow and be a part of the Arrupe Emerging Leaders Program. I was able to engage with activists, students, and both of my Dean's as we did leadership workshops. I was able to be a part of the Partnership for College Completion, I am a part of the America Needs You program where first generation and low-income students can network with people in different fields and have mentor coach to help with interviews, creating a resume and much more.
My favorite spot on campus:
I would say the fourth floor since there are study rooms. I have engaged with different students while we studied, while we worked on projects together or even just relaxed after a long day of classes. I love how there is room for more than one person, the privacy there is but also like it was my own home. I love going there when it is open as it allows me to study before class or talk to a friend for a bit as we digest the day together.
Some surprisingly cool things about Arrupe:
Art Fellows (of course!), the students, and all the staff. Everyone here wants you to succeed. I have never felt such strong sense of community from a university. Everyone here knows each other, takes care of one another and is always willing to help. It is like there is something in the air that makes everyone want to gravitate towards one another to help one another out.
